Learning in the Primary Pond

This site is a one-stop shop for teaching strategies focused on struggling readers. It incorporates ideas, activities, resources to assist students with developing their reading competency inside and out of class. This learning is also linked to other key areas in the curriculum to develop effective practices for all learning.

The Struggle is Real

This blog post is not specific to English but cautions against the over-simplification of activities for struggling students. It encourages teachers to maintain a level of difficulty for all students when facilitating activities and provides strategies for supporting productive struggle.

These segments were taken from the ‘Literacy for the 21st Century‘ textbook and detail the key features of the reading process, the different types of reading, and the implications of these features and types within a classroom setting. They can be useful for the planning and implementation of different lessons and activities to facilitate reading development in students.

Reading Accuracy Strategies

This poster was collected found inside a classroom and provides an excellent visual reference for teachers and students to develop students reading comprehension. Just ensure the different elements have been scaffolded correctly and this resource can be used independently by students to assist their learning.

Edutopia: Strategies for struggling readers

This article provides a number of different teaching strategies to assist struggling readers both inside and out of the classroom. These strategies can easily be integrated into any classroom as they don’t require additional resources but rather address pedagogies and activities facilitated within the learning environment. Edutopia also has a range of additional articles to assist teachers with facilitating a number of other key learning areas.

UTCRLA Essential Reading Strategies for the Struggling Reader

This is a huge resource that includes a MASSIVE range of activities, strategies, and pedagogies to integrate into the classroom to help develop struggling readers comprehension. Basic lesson overviews are used to display this information, including objectives, materials, sequences, and adaptations. This is an excellent resource to have on hand in the classroom, as a one-stop-shop for lesson planning ideas.
